Day 1: Arrival & Tirana City Tour Day 1: Pick-Up and Tirane City Tour

Activities:  Group arrives in port of entry and travels to Tirana for accommodation. The program continues with city tour and attractions followed by traditional meal in local restaurant. Tirana is the capital and largest city of Albania which offers a mixed aroma of the old and the modern, a meeting point where East meets the West, thriving with development but still preserving the traditional. Here we will have a chance to visit the Scanderbeg Square, Bunk Art2 Museum (former atomic bunker of communist leader), Haxhi Et’hem Bey Mosque, Orthodox Cathedral, Saint Paul Cathedral, and the Pyramid, public buildings from different periods of time, the main boulevard, and many other attractions.

Welcome dinner will be organized in a traditional restaurant in the city center of Tirana.

Day 2: Durrës & Berat Day 2: Visit Durres and Berat City

Activities: The group will travel to Durres which is one of the oldest cities in Albania being established in the 7th century BC. It was a very important sea port throughout the history of the country and a glorious city especially during the 1st century BC until the 5th century AD as the beginning of the Via Egnatia (a roman build road connecting Rome with Constantinople). Here we shall visit an archeological museum, history museum, ruins of a Roman amphitheater and city center.

Before departure the group will enjoy a gelato on the waterfront promenade.

The group will continue to Berat, another ancient city dating from the 6th century BC. This is a UNESCO world heritage city inscribed as a rare example of architecture character typical of the Ottoman period. Berat bears witness to the coexistence of various religious and cultural communities down the centuries. It features a castle, locally known as the Kala, most of which was built in the 13th century, although its origins date back to the 4th century BC. The citadel area numbers many Byzantine churches, mainly from the 13th century, as well as several mosques built under the Ottoman era which began in 1417. Here the group will visit the castle, medieval center, Mangalem and Gorica quarters, Gorica stone bridge, Onufri Museum, Ethnographic Museum, King Mosque and Halveti Teqe of the Bektashi Order.

Day 3: Berat & Vlorë Day 3: Visit Berat and Vlorë

Activities: The group will leave Berat and stop for a short visit in Ardenica Monastery. The Monastery which was built in 1282 by Byzantine Emperor, Andronikos II Paleologos following the victory against the Angevins, houses the an Orthodox Church dedicated to The Nativity of the Theotokos (Mother of God) which is the church where Scanderbeg (Albanian National Hero) married Andronika Arianity in 1451.

From Ardenica the group will continue to Apollonia archaeological site. Apollonia was an ancient city on the banks of Aous River, present day Vjosa River. Greek colons from Corfu and Corinth settled here in the 6th century BC.  Apollonia flourish during the Roman period and was home to a school of philosophy. Augustus studied in Apollonia while Cicero noted the city as great and important.  After the visits the group will contoue to Vlora. Vlora is an important port city and also the city of Albanian Independence. After lunch the group will visit the Flag Square and Independence Monument; this is the place where Albanians declared independence from the Ottomans on 28 November 1912. Further on the group will visit the mosque in the center and also the independence museum and enjoy a walk along the newly build waterfront promenade

Day 4: Vlorë and Sarandë Day 4: Visit Vlorë and Sarandë

Activities:  The program starts with a short walk in the Caesar Pass in the Llogara Park with amazing views of the bay of Vlora and Albanian Riviera. After the walk continue towards Saranda along the Riviera and stop in Himara, Porto Palermo Bay and Borsh. In Himara we will visit the castle. The next stop is in Porto Palermo Bay for visits of the Ali Pasha Castle and a short break at the beach. In Borsh we stop at the water spring for a short coffee break.

Upon arrival in Saranda the group will check in and have a walk along the waterfront promenade.

Day 5: Sarandë and Butrint Day 5: Visit Sarandë and Butrint

Activities: The program starts with a visit of Butrint archaeological site. This is the most important archeological park in Albania also part of UNESCO world heritage. It is inscribed by UNESCO as a very rare combination of archaeology and nature. The property is a microcosm of Mediterranean history, with occupation dating from 50 000 BC, at its earliest evidence, up to the 19th century AD. Prehistoric sites have been identified within the nucleus of Butrint, the small hill surrounded by the waters of Lake Butrint and Vivari Channel, as well as in its wider territory. From 800 BC until the arrival of the Romans, Butrint was influenced by Greek culture, bearing elements of a “polis” and being settled by Chaonian tribes. In 44 BC Butrint became a Roman colony and expanded considerably on reclaimed marshland, primarily to the south across the Vivari Channel, where an aqueduct was built. In the 5th century AD Butrint became an Episcopal centre; it was fortified and substantial early Christian structures were built. After a period of abandonment, Butrint was reconstructed under Byzantine control in the 9th century.

After the visit the group will enjoy sometime at the beautiful beach of Ksamil. Free time in afternoon.

Day 6: Sarandë and Gjirokastër Day 6: Visit Sarandë and Gjirokastër

Activities: The group will leave Saranda and head to the Blue Eye Spring and MesopotamMonastery.

The program will continue to the city of Gjirokastër. This is another UNESCO world heritage city which is built entirely of stone. Gjirokastër offers an outstanding architecture of two story stone build tower type houses. These are built in clusters around the castle which dominates the city on the slopes of Mali i Gjerë Mountain. We will visit the city walking in cobble stone streets, castle, weapons musem and some of the impressive houses like the Kadare House, HoxhaHouse, and Zekate House.

Day 7: Gjirokastër and Korçë Day 7: Visit Gjirokastër and Korçë

Activities: The program will continue towards Permet along the Vjosa River where the group will have a short stop for sightseeing. The group continues towards Korca, this is a very beautiful and scenic drive along the Dhembel and Nemercka Mountains. We will stop in Leskovik and Erseka before we reach Korca.

Day 8: Korçë and Tiranë Day 8: Visit Korçë and Tiranë

Activities: The group will visit the city of Korça and main attractions like old bazaar, the Orthodox Cathedral, Museum of Education located in the first Albanian school, the Iconography Museum of Medieval Art and walk along the Republic Boulevard and city center. Travel to Pogradec for a lakeside promenade at Lake Ohrid.The group will continue toward Tirana.
